The Memorable Volunteer Work

The work of volunteers is very nobleness, because the volunteers make many contributions to society and they do not want the reward. We always can see a lot of volunteers sent out the brochures about environmental protection or whip-round in the sun or wind among the crowd. However, many passers do not pay any attention to them; they even leave about the leaflet. Their actions make me angry and I decide to be a volunteer at that time.

I have been a member of Charity Volunteers last year and I tried to participate in the every week’s activities. This year I am a volunteer of Maanshan Country Tax Bureau of Economy and Technology Development Zone, because I can do the volunteer work in my hometown---Maanshan. When I went there and said I want to be a volunteer, the people in office were very happy; they said that I can help them when I have the free time.

I felt that the time was very short when I was doing the volunteer work. For example, an afternoon, I was going to find some work to do, suddenly, a good-tempered uncle saw me and asked to me: “Hi, I don’t know how to use Excel to count, could you please come here to help me?” I was so happy because Mr. Gallinelli was just teaching us in the last class. Then, I taught the uncle and he learned to count. Unconsciously, one hour had been passed. I used the other one hour to clean the lobby’s banisters and the lobby’s floor. The cleaner taught me how to mop the floor efficient so I can do the cleaning work handy and facility.

The other day, I helped an aunt to sort out data. She sprained her ankle when she was going to the company, so I decided to help her to sort out the data. She said “Thanks” to me and told me how to sort out those data. When I finished the work, I gived her my telephone number and said that if she needs my help, she can call me. The aunt looked very happy and said thanks to me. I felt very satisfied because I could get the trust from the other people.

During the time while I be a volunteer in the Maanshan Country Tax Bureau of Economy and Technology Development Zone, I learned a lot of knowledge and information about how to clean, how to sort out data file, how to guide the way to the taxpayer or the other people, how to communicate with the stranger. After this process, I find that I become more confident and I can do some difficult things by myself. These unique experiences can make me be sure of myself and I believe that I can do better in the future!

An Interesting Public Event

I have watched a wonderful lecture on April 13th. The lecture made me understand a lot of thing about movie and I think it was a nice lecture. On that day, after the lunch, Alice, Maggie, Shirley and I went to GCA Ms. Morgan’s classroom. Jenny, who was the experienced TV presenter, was already standing in front of the classroom and David Tao, our Movie Club Leader, was going to say the prologue.
We found the seats and began to watch the lecture. Jenny went to GCA to have the lecture was because David Tao hoped she can come here to have a lecture and make us learn more information about movie or TV.
During the lecture, Jenny told us many things about how to make the TV or movie, such as record, post-editing, compilation, making up, the choice of music, are all very important. She said as we know, when we make the movie we will find that the movie’s effect is not as same as the moment when we shoot it, is worse than before. The reason of it is that we don’t have the creative, professional people to make up our movie and we don’t have enough experience.
In fact, this is not a real lecture, because we had a lot of interaction during the lecture, and we can ask any question which we were not very understand. Jenny was very kind and she answered every question patient. I like this event because I learned many things from Jenny. I make a plan that I will watch at least one movie once a week because I think movies can give us some ideas and as a Movie Club member, it’s good for me!

Go to a Performance with My Best Friend

I have watched a wonderful performance on December 19th 2008. This performance is called “The Taming of the Shrew”. The main character of this show is Katharina, who is an intelligent, but grumpy shrew, unwillingly married nobleman, Petruchio. Afterwards, Petruchio “tamed” his wife into an obedient and gentle woman.

In the evening of December 19th, 2008, Fiona and I went to Nanjing Foreign Language School Auditorium which is on the 3rd floor, over the Cafeteria to watch the performance. The reason why we choose this performance is that this performance was from GCA Drama Club and we wanted to see the product of Drama Club’s labor.

The door opened at 6:30pm. Fiona and I decided to spend the extra time to do some volunteer work and our work was to guide the way for the VIP. There were many audiences going there and there were also many teachers who came round to watch the show. With a wink, the show was going to begin. Every one was very excited and we didn’t know the actors. The introduction of “The Taming of The Shrew” is a drunken man Sly who has a dream in an inn. In his dream, he meets a lord and his pages that intends to play a trick on him. They perform a play for him………

I think this performance was interesting and every actor performed very well. This performance was common for me because I couldn’t understand every thing in it, but it was not boring, as its plot was attractive. This performance made me further understand the Shakespeare ; What’s more, this is one of my unforgettable experience.

One Unique Western Food Learning Experience

Participate in a Service Activity organized by a GCA teacher

April 11th was Saturday, Maggie and I went to school to learn how to cook the Western food. Ms. Bartell told us that we should learn how to make the Western food, and then taught another two of our Fundraising Group members: Allen and Mike. We met at the GCA on 8:30, and the person who taught us is an international student and our task is making a chocolate cake.
At the very beginning, the international student told us to buy some materials for the chocolate cake. Maggie and I have been allocated to buy eggs. Then, at 9 o‘clock, we started with these materials which includes one bag of flour, three bunches of chocolate, three pears, one box of eggs, some sugar and ten boxes of butter.
The process of cooking the chocolate cake is not very easy. First step was mixing flour and eggs into a vessel. When the flour and eggs were mixing together, put the melting chocolate and butter into the vessel. The third step was putting the massive pears into the vessel, then took one oven paper enclosed the vessel and put it into the oven. Next, we needed to wait. After almost forty minutes, the chocolate cake was finished! It tasted very nice and it was the first time I cook the cake. It made me felt very excited and interested.
I love this activity because it let me know the joys of cooking. At the next two weeks, Maggie and I taught Allen and Mike to make this cake. Then we played up strengths and avoided weaknesses; finally, we cooked our own chocolate cake, and Ms. Bartell and every 10-F students have tasted our cake!
